Corrosion Control explained

Corrosion control and prevention in Perth

What is corrosion?

Corrosion is the deterioration of a metal due to chemical and/or electrochemical reaction between the metal and its surrounding environment. It is a diffusion-controlled process which occurs on exposed surfaces.

What is corrosion control?

Corrosion control refers to the methods that are implemented in order to control corrosion that has been initiated, but not progressed.  Having corrosion control measures in place will either stop the on-going corrosion activity or provide a significant reduction in the corrosion rate which in turn extends the service life of the rehabilitated structure.

    How can corrosion be controlled?

There are several ways in which corrosion can be controlled and they include:

    Cathodic Protection

Uses direct current to counteract corrosion in structures such as building, bridges, storage tanks, etc.  This form of control will stop corrosion from worsening and/or prevent the onset of corrosion.

Application of protective coatings and linings

Are considered an important method for fighting corrosion and are usually applied in conjunction with Cathodic Protection; achieving high level and cost-effective corrosion protection.

    Corrosion inhibitors

Are chemical compounds that are added to water or other process liquids, to decrease the corrosion rate of a material, such as a metal or an alloy, in certain environments.

    Corrosion resistant materials

Such as special alloys, plastic and stainless steel.
