Detecting water leaking through the walls

Why is Water is leaking through the walls?

Water leaking through the walls can not only be unsightly to look at but can also cause extensive damage and ongoing costs. It doesn’t matter if you have polished concrete, timber or drywall, once water is apparent, it will begin to, in time, leak through the walls.

It is important to note that not all water leaks are as easily noticeable as flowing down the side of the wall to the floor. It is not uncommon for a leak to be more internal and not visible to the naked eye. If this is the case, then the leak may not become visible until significant amounts of water have left a moisture mark on the wall.

For residential water leaking, internal wet areas are described as common household areas which are readily affected by water usages such as bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. Bathrooms by their very nature, are affected by constant water exposure being consistently among the most common building defect reported by homeowner’s, therefore, making waterproofing essential.

One thing that is crucial to do if there is a leak in your wall, is to see if the damage is only worsened when raining, rather than being ongoing and constantly flowing. The reason for this is that if the leak is only occurring when raining, then this means that there is failed to waterproof and it is seeping in from the outside. If the water is constantly flowing irrespective of weather, then this means that it is more likely that there is a burst internal pipe and a plumber is needed.
