WATER TANKS WATERPROOFING
Types of water tanks
The main type of water tanks include:
- Above ground – located on the ground but with minimal contact;
- Underground – located underground and exposed to groundwater and an underground aggressive environment;
- Firefighters – designed to store process water to extinguish possible fires and usually built underground near significant facilities; and
- Potable – designed to store drinking water and can be located underground or above ground.
The large volume of water stored in these tanks will push on the walls of the tank and, in the absence of appropriate protection, may destroy the concrete base and cause water to leak out through various small cracks or holes leading to structural integrity issues very quickly.
Above ground tanks require a protective layer be applied to the internal concrete surface providing sufficient elasticity to withstand the expansion and compression of the walls and floors caused by temperature fluctuations and high coefficient water resistance.
Within the first several months of their operation, underground water tanks will begin to leak due to the pressure and impact of groundwater. In the absence of a suitable waterproofing system, moisture will enter the concrete causing cracks to form resulting in structural damage.
Water tanks waterproofing specialists
When tanks are used to store water for consumption, whether it be a residential, commercial or a water facilities tank, the water must be free from harmful organisms. In the absence of a waterproofing system in a water tank, leaks will occur thus allowing contaminants to enter the tank and consequently the stored water. Furthermore, in the case of waste water treatment plants, a leak in the tanks may cause serious environmental damage.
BUSS’ waterproofing specialists have considerable experience in the installation of fit for purpose waterproofing systems to water tanks which ensures protection against concrete cracking and deterioration and prevention of water contamination whilst safeguarding its structural integrity.
